Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro Announces 10-Day Block of X; Signal Also Affected

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced that he signed a document authorizing Conatel, the telecom regulator, to block access to the X social network for 10 days. This requires its owner, Elon Musk, to present several documents before allowing it to operate again in the country. Paradoxically, using X, Maduro called for an end to “plans on social networks to spread violence, hatred, and attack Venezuela from abroad.” Soon after Maduro’s remarks at a rally, several internet service providers (ISPs) started suspending access to X. This was confirmed by Netblocks, an internet observatory, revealing that X’s social network functionalities and its website were unreachable using the largest ISPs in the country. While Maduro did not order any suspension for the messaging app Signal, it was also blocked, as reported by Netblocks. Previously, Maduro had proposed to fight Elon Musk, with Tron founder Justin Sun offering to host the fight in Grenada.
