Optimism’s OP Stack Now Officially Entered Stage 1
Key Points:
- Optimism, Ethereum’s Layer 2 solution, achieves the Stage 1 decentralization milestone by integrating fault proofs into its smart contracts.
- This development, in line with Vitalik Buterin’s framework, signifies enhanced security and decentralization for Optimism’s OP Stack.
Ethereum’s Layer 2 solution, Optimism, has achieved a significant milestone by integrating fault proofs into its smart contracts, as announced by its development team, OP Labs.
Optimism’s OP Stack Now Officially Entered Stage 1 2
Optimism’s OP Stack Reaches Decentralization Milestone
The development marks Optimism’s OP Stack entering what Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin terms as “Stage 1” of decentralization, a crucial step outlined in Buterin’s framework for the development stages of Layer 2 networks.
Buterin welcomed this progress, expressing anticipation for more Layer 2 solutions to reach similar stages, particularly emphasizing the importance of zero-knowledge (ZK) based ones.
The concept of development stages for Layer 2 networks, introduced by Buterin in November 2022, aims to provide clarity on the maturity level of these solutions. By delineating stages, the community can gauge whether a Layer 2 network, specifically Rollup-based ones, has reached a level comparable to Ethereum‘s mainnet.
At Stage 0, the initial phase, Rollup networks establish operational nodes and execute transactions on-chain while interacting with Layer 1. Most Layer 2 networks currently reside at this stage.
Transitioning from Stage 0 to Stage 1 necessitates the deployment of a specific proof framework, such as Fault Proof or Validity Proof. With Optimism’s integration of Fault Proof, OP Mainnet has officially advanced to Stage 1.
Enhanced Security and User Trust
Optimism’s OP Stack now enables users to withdraw Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens from Optimism’s chains to Layer 1 without relying on a trusted intermediary, thereby allowing invalid withdrawals to be rectified.
Optimism joins other Layer 2 solutions like Arbitrum, dYdX, and zkSync Lite at Stage 1, offering enhanced decentralization and security features.
However, despite the permissionless nature of Fault Proof, emergency scenarios may prompt the Security Council to revert the system to a permissioned state. Nonetheless, this achievement underscores Optimism’s commitment to advancing Ethereum’s scalability and decentralization goals.
